Spallanzanis digestion experiment

Spallanzanis digestion experiment. Historical artwork of an experiment on digestion carried out by the Italian biologist Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799). Spallanzani fed birds with food in perforated containers, which were recovered by pulling on an attached string (seen here). Spallanzani concluded that a major part of digestion is the action of fluids in the stomach, which he named gastric juices. Spallanzanis experiments helped to overturn Galens theory that digestion was a form of cooking due to the heat of the stomach

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork captures the renowned Italian biologist Lazzaro Spallanzani conducting his groundbreaking digestion experiment. In this colored illustration from the 18th century, we witness Spallanzani's ingenious method of studying digestion in birds. By feeding them through perforated containers and retrieving the food using attached strings, he revolutionized our understanding of this essential bodily process. Spallanzani's meticulous research led him to challenge Galen's long-standing theory that digestion was akin to cooking due to stomach heat. Through his experiments, he discovered the crucial role played by gastric juices in breaking down food within the stomach. These fluids, which he aptly named gastric juices, were identified as a major component of digestion. The image showcases an adult European male scientist surrounded by laboratory equipment and accompanied by an assistant. It provides a glimpse into the world of scientific exploration during that era and highlights Spallanzani's contributions to physiology and biology. As we delve into history with this remarkable print from Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how pioneering scientists like Spallanzani paved the way for modern understanding of physiological processes. Their tireless dedication continues to inspire researchers today as they unravel new mysteries surrounding our intricate digestive system and its vital functions.
