Spotted soapfish

Spotted soapfish (Pogonoperca punctata). This fish inhabits coral reefs and deep reef drop offs in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It can reach 35 centimetres in length. It is known for its ability to secrete a toxic skin mucus when it is threatened. This contains the chemical grammistin, which can be lethal to other fish. This is of particular importance in the aquarium trade, as the release of the chemical can kill the tanks inhabitants, including the soapfish itself. Photographed off Banda Island, Moluccas, Indonesia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Spotted soapfish (Pogonoperca punctata) in its natural habitat. Found in coral reefs and deep reef drop-offs across the tropical Indo-Pacific region, this fish is a true marvel of nature. Growing up to 35 centimeters in length, it commands attention with its striking spotted pattern. However, what truly sets the Spotted soapfish apart is its remarkable defense mechanism. When threatened, it secretes a toxic skin mucus containing grammistin, a chemical that can prove fatal to other fish. This unique ability serves as both protection and survival for this magnificent creature. While this adaptation proves advantageous in the wild, it poses challenges within aquarium settings. The release of grammistin can have devastating consequences for tank inhabitants, including the soapfish itself. As such, caution must be exercised when considering these fascinating creatures for display. Photographed off Banda Island in Indonesia's Moluccas region, this image captures an extraordinary moment beneath the surface of our oceans. It reminds us of nature's intricate web and highlights how even seemingly small organisms play vital roles within their ecosystems. With its vibrant colors and intriguing features, this photograph from Science Photo Library invites us into the world of marine biology and encourages appreciation for Earth's diverse fauna.
