It was buoyed up by helium gas, and propelled by petrol engines. It carried a crew of 25, and was armed with Lewis machine guns. Photograph published in The March of Commerce (1927), volume 4 of The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in American aviation history. The image showcases the USS Shenandoah airship, the first rigid airship utilized by the US Navy, alongside its tender, the newly-converted USS Patoka. Taken during tests in 1924, this photograph offers a glimpse into early pioneering efforts in aerial warfare. The majestic USS Shenandoah spanned an impressive length of 207 meters and had a width of 25 meters. Powered by petrol engines and buoyed up by helium gas, it boasted advanced technology for its time. With a crew of 25 on board and armed with Lewis machine guns, this airship played a vital role in maritime defense. Tragically, just one year after this picture was taken, disaster struck when the USS Shenandoah was torn apart during a storm and crashed in September 1925. Despite its untimely demise, this historic vessel remains an emblem of technological innovation and naval engineering prowess. Published as part of "The March of Commerce" series within "The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States" this photograph commemorates not only the specific event but also marks America's journey since its founding in 1776. It serves as a reminder of our nation's commitment to pushing boundaries and advancing scientific progress throughout history.
