John Gould (14 September 1804 - 3 February 1881). Engraving by T.H. Maguire 1849 as part of the friends of the Ipswich Museum series. Gould was a wildlife illustrator and ornithologist born in Lyme Regis who early on became an expert taxidermist and curator at the Zoological Society of London. He took the opportunity to go into ornithology publishing, with his wife, Edward Lear, and others illustrating many of his works. His publications are now considered classics in bird illustration. He also advised Darwin on the birds he brought back from his Beagle voyages. Darwin originally misidentified the finches when he collected them on the Galapagos, and also failed to label them very well. John Gould identified them for him and alerted him to them as a new group of 12 closely related unique species of ground finch. The name Darwins finches for the group was applied by Percy Lowe in 1936

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned artist and ornithologist, John Gould, in 1849. Known for his exceptional talent in wildlife illustration and taxidermy, Gould's contributions to the field of ornithology are immeasurable. In this engraving by T. H. Maguire, part of the friends of the Ipswich Museum series, we see a glimpse into Gould's life and work. Born on September 14th, 1804 in Lyme Regis, England, Gould quickly established himself as an expert curator at the Zoological Society of London. Collaborating with notable figures such as Edward Lear and his wife, he published numerous works that have now become classics in bird illustration. Gould's significance extended beyond artistry; he played a pivotal role in Charles Darwin's journey towards understanding evolution. When Darwin collected finches during his Beagle voyages to Galapagos Islands but misidentified them initially, it was John Gould who correctly identified these birds as a new group comprising twelve closely related species known today as "Darwin's finches". The monochrome black-and-white artwork captures not only the beauty of nature but also highlights Gould's expertise in taxonomy and speciation. His meticulous attention to detail is evident through every stroke on paper. Paul D. Stewart has skillfully captured this historical moment from Science Photo Library without commercial intent. This print serves as a tribute to John Gould's remarkable legacy within both scientific exploration and artistic expression.
