Joseph de Tournefort, French botanist

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708), French botanist. In 1683 de Tournefort became Professor of Botany at the Jardin de Roi, Paris, and collected specimens throughout Europe for the Jardin during 1685-89. By 1689 he was considered the foremost botanist in Europe. He created the modern concept of genus, defining it by diagnosis and making a distinction between the describing and naming of a genus. This taxonomic concept was used by later scientists, including Linnaeus, and most of the 725 genera that de Tournefort recognised are still accepted. In addition de Tournefort was interested in mineralogy, shells and medicine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Joseph de Tournefort, a renowned French botanist who made significant contributions to the field of biology. Born in 1656, de Tournefort's passion for plants and nature led him to become Professor of Botany at the prestigious Jardin de Roi in Paris in 1683. During his tenure, he embarked on numerous expeditions across Europe, collecting specimens that would enrich the botanical collection of the Jardin. De Tournefort's most notable achievement was his creation of the modern concept of genus. He revolutionized taxonomy by defining genus through diagnosis and distinguishing between describing and naming a genus. This groundbreaking taxonomic approach influenced later scientists like Linnaeus and remains widely accepted today. In fact, out of the remarkable 725 genera recognized by de Tournefort, many are still acknowledged within scientific circles. Beyond his botanical pursuits, de Tournefort also dabbled in mineralogy, shells, and medicine – showcasing his multidisciplinary interests within natural sciences. This colored illustration from the 18th century beautifully captures this pioneering man against a backdrop symbolizing both his era (17th century) and profession. Joseph Pitton de Tournefort's legacy as an influential biologist is immortalized through this striking artwork. His dedication to understanding plant classification has left an indelible mark on the history of science while inspiring future generations to explore and appreciate Earth's diverse flora.
