Framed Print of Sir James Clark Ross, British explorer
Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862), British naval officer and polar explorer who was knighted in 1843. Here, he is in naval uniform and holding a telescope. Ross found the north magnetic pole in 1831 and explored Antarctica between 1839 and 1843, where he discovered Victoria Land and the volcano Mount Erebus. Ross Island, the Ross Sea, the Ross Barrier and the Ross Dependency are all named after him. His last voyage, in 1848, attempted to find the lost Northwest Passage expedition led by fellow British naval officer and explorer Sir John Franklin. This German engraving dates from around 1880.
