Sombrero galaxy (M104), HST image

Sombrero galaxy (M104, NGC 4594), Hubble Space Telescope image. This spiral galaxy is seen almost edge-on to Earth. Its disc is seen as a dark band of dust crossing the brighter central bulge. Most of a galaxys mass is thought to be in the form of dark matter, some of which can be detected when it obscures the light from stars behind it. The Sombrero galaxy lies around 28 million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. It is around 50, 000 light years across, less than half the width of our Milky Way galaxy. The image is a mosaic of six true-colour images taken by the HSTs Advanced Camera for Surveys in spring 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the Sombrero galaxy (M104), captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Positioned almost edge-on to Earth, this spiral galaxy reveals its intricate features in stunning detail. The dark band of dust gracefully cuts across the luminous central bulge, creating a striking contrast that highlights its celestial elegance. Within this galactic masterpiece lies a fascinating secret – most of its mass is believed to be composed of enigmatic dark matter. This elusive substance becomes detectable when it obstructs the light emitted by stars residing behind it, offering us glimpses into its mysterious nature. Located approximately 28 million light years away from our planet in the constellation Virgo, the Sombrero galaxy spans an impressive width of around 50,000 light years. Interestingly, this makes it less than half as wide as our very own Milky Way galaxy. The image presented here is a remarkable mosaic crafted from six true-color images taken by HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys during spring 2003. Its breathtaking composition immerses us in a cosmic journey through space and time while reminding us of humanity's insatiable curiosity about our vast universe and all its wonders.
