Framed Print of Soviet Luna 9 spacecraft
Luna 9 spacecraft. This Soviet spacecraft made the first unmanned soft landing on the Moon, on 3rd February 1966. It sent back photographs of the lunar surface and allowed measurements to be made of surface properties such as crater structure and surface cohesiveness. The landing capsule (upper left, grey) was ejected when the front of the spacecraft (lower centre) touched the surface. It landed and rolled upright before unfolding. Luna 9 was the third Soviet attempt to make a soft landing on the Moon. Photographed at the Aerospace Pavilion of the Soviet national exhibition centre (All-Union Exhibition of Peoples Economic Achievements, VDNKh), now known as the All-Russia Exhibition Centre, Moscow, Russia, in 1971. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © RIA Novosti
