Framed Print of Space dog capsule
Space dog capsule. Model of Sputnik 2, the Soviet satellite capsule that carried Laika, the dog who became the first animal to go into orbit. Sputnik 2 was launched on 3 November 1957. Laika (meaning husky or barker ) was held in an airtight cabin with a food store and an air conditioner. Instruments transmitted data to Earth about Laikas pulse, respiration, blood pressure and heartbeat until she died. At the time, the Soviet news agency said she lived for some seven days, but in fact she died a few hours after take- off, due to overheating and panic. The spacecraft was not designed to be recovered and it burnt up as it re- entered the atmosphere on 14 April 1958, 162 days after its launch. Photographed at the USSR National Economy Achievements Exhibition, Moscow.
