Framed Print of Surgery in hyperbaric chamber, Russia
Surgery in a hyoperbaric chamber. View of a chamber used in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The lights above an operating table inside the chamber may be seen through the window at left. In this kind of hard chamber the pressure may be raised to up to 6 bar (600 kilopascal). The atmosphere is 21% oxygen, although patients in the chamber can breathe 100% oxygen through a mask. HBOT was originally used for decompression sickness in divers, but it has been found useful in carbon monoxide poisoning, in the treatment of gas gangrene and may be of some use in cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis. Photographed at the Research Institute for Experimental and Clinical Surgery, Moscow, in 1978. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © RIA NOVOSTI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
