Tram electrical systems, 19th century

Tram electrical systems, 19th-century artwork. Electrification of trams (also called streetcars) took place in the 1880s and 1890s. This diagram shows the circuitry in a tram carriage connecting the controls (upper left and upper right) with the motors (lower centre) that drove the wheels. Power was supplied by overhead cables (top), here through a pole making contact with the wire through a small wheel. An electric lighting system is also shown here. Artwork from the 17th volume (first period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the intricate tram electrical systems of the 19th century, showcasing a pivotal moment in transportation history. The electrification of trams, also known as streetcars, revolutionized urban mobility during the 1880s and 1890s. This detailed diagram illustrates the circuitry within a tram carriage, connecting the controls positioned at the upper left and upper right corners with the motors located in the lower center that powered its wheels. The power source for these trams came from overhead cables depicted at the top of this monochrome print. A pole equipped with a small wheel made contact with these wires to supply electricity to propel these vehicles forward. Additionally, an electric lighting system is showcased here, highlighting further advancements in technology during this era. This extraordinary artwork originates from La Science Illustree, a renowned French popular science weekly publication dating back to 1896. It showcases not only technological innovation but also provides insight into historical engineering practices and public transport development. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing illustration, we are transported back in time to witness how early electrical power was harnessed for efficient transportation purposes. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of progress throughout history.
