Framed Print of Tunguska forest
Fallen trees at Tunguska, 100 years after the famous explosion. At around 7.14am local time on 30 June 1908 a powerful explosion occurred above the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in the Krasnoyarsk region of Russia. It is believed that this was the air burst of a meteoroid or cometary fragment a few tens of metres across. Even though the explosion was 5-10 kilometres above the ground, the energy released was enough to flatten an estimated 80 million trees across an area of 2150 square kilometres. The energy released has been calculated as equivalent to 10-15 megatons of TNT - similar to a large hydrogen bomb.
