Framed Print of Watt experimenting as a child, 1740s

Watt experimenting as a child. At right, a young James Watt (1736-1819) with his parents (James Watt and Agnes Muirhead) plays with a spoon upon the spout of a kettle. Born in the port of Greenock on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, Watt was initially educated at home by his mother. He went on to become an engineer and inventor. By 1790, the Watt steam engine (developed in the 1760s in Glasgow) had replaced the Newcomen engine. This 1868 engraving by Herbert Bourne (1820-1907) is based on an 1863 oil painting by British artist Marcus Stone (1840-1921), titled James Watt Discovering the Condensation of Steam.
