Recession of the Pasterze Glacier
Recession of the Pasterze Glacier. This sign (lower right) marks the edge of the glacier in 1990, showing the rapid recession that has taken place since then. Glaciers are rivers of ice that form when compacted snow from high ground turns into ice and flows downhill under its own weight. This glacier, over 8 kilometres in length, is one of the longest in Austria. It is currently retreating, decreasing in length by about 10 metres per year. Glacial retreat is thought to be caused by global warming. Photographed in Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria, in the eastern Alps

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the alarming recession of the Pasterze Glacier, located in Hohe Tauern National Park, Austria. The sign positioned at the lower right corner serves as a stark reminder of how much this glacier has retreated since 1990. Stretching over 8 kilometers, the Pasterze Glacier is one of Austria's longest glaciers and showcases the immense power and beauty of nature. Glaciers like this are formed when compacted snow from higher altitudes transforms into ice and flows downhill under its own weight. However, due to global warming, these majestic rivers of ice are rapidly diminishing. The Pasterze Glacier is currently losing approximately 10 meters in length each year. The barren landscape surrounding the glacier highlights both its vulnerability and significance within our changing climate. As temperatures rise worldwide, glacial retreat becomes an unfortunate consequence that scientists attribute to global warming. This photograph not only illustrates the physical geography and geological features of this region but also acts as a visual representation of Earth science in action. It serves as a poignant reminder that we must address climate change urgently to protect our planet's delicate ecosystems for future generations.
