Alan Turing, British mathematician

Alan Turing. Caricature of the British mathematician Alan Turing (1912-54). In 1937 Turing described a theoretical computer (a Turing machine) in rigorous mathematical terms, formalising the previously vague concept of computability. During the Second World War he worked as a code breaker at Bletchley Park, Britains codebreaking centre. In 1939-40 Turing and Cambridge mathematician, Gordon Welchman, designed the British Bombe, which could break any Enigma-enciphered message. In later years he worked on Artificial Intelligence, devising the Turing test to decide whether a computer can be thought of as truly intelligent. Turing committed suicide when prosecuted for his homosexuality, a criminal offence at the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a caricature of the brilliant British mathematician, Alan Turing. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to computer science and code-breaking during World War II, Turing's legacy is immortalized in this comical illustration. In 1937, he revolutionized the field by describing a theoretical computer called the Turing machine, formalizing the concept of computability. His invaluable work at Bletchley Park as a code breaker played a pivotal role in deciphering Enigma-enciphered messages using the ingenious British Bombe that he co-designed with Gordon Welchman. Beyond his wartime achievements, Turing delved into Artificial Intelligence and devised the renowned "Turing test" which aimed to determine whether computers could exhibit true intelligence. Tragically, despite his immense contributions to society, Turing faced persecution due to his homosexuality—a criminal offense at that time—and ultimately took his own life. This monochrome artwork captures both the historical significance and comical essence of Turing's character. With its white background and intricate details, it serves as a powerful reminder of his extraordinary intellect and enduring impact on mathematics, cryptography, computing, and human history itself. This portrait pays homage to an exceptional individual who pushed boundaries in science while facing personal struggles—an emblematic figure whose brilliance continues to inspire generations today.
