Framed Print of Multiple births, satirical artwork
Multiple births. 16th century artwork showing multiple births of dogs (centre) and humans (right). Seven births are depicted, common for dogs but very rare for humans. There is one documented example of septuplets from the 15th century, and the scene depicted here combines satire and humour. This woodcut illustration is from a circa 1510 edition of the Vergier d honneur, a book by the medieval French poets Andre de la Vigne and Octavien de Saint-Gelais. This copy of this artwork is from Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932). Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
