Framed Print of Dinner in Iguanodon dinosaur
1854 Illustrated London News January 7th, page 22. Dinner in the iguanodon model, at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham. Hosted 31st December 1853 by the Crystal Palace model maker Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. Guests include Edward Forbes, Joseph Prestwich, John Gould, and Richard Owen at the head (the likeness here is poor but Hawkins records the fact in his journal). Scientists instrumental in reconstructing the past are also noted on plaques above the diners, including William Buckland (megalosaurus). Baron Cuvier (Pterodactyle, Megatherium and others). Richard Owen (coined the term dinosaur) and Gideon Mantell who had recently died (Iguanodon and Hyaeolosaurus). At the dinner songs were sung in memory of the antediluvians. The Iguanodon model which weighed over 30 tonnes went on to be displayed in the Sydenham park grounds where it can still be found today.
