Zenobe Gramme, Belgian engineer
Zenobe Gramme (1826-1901), Belgian engineer. Gramme was an electrical engineer, invented a direct current generator known as the Gramme machine. The device was demonstrated in 1871, but it was not until 1873 that it was found that it could be used as a dynamo when the current was reversed. This discovery was accidental, but meant that the Gramme machine was the first electric motor to be used on an industrial scale.
