Barber-surgeons, satirical artwork
Barber-surgeons. Satirical artwork depicting barber-surgeons and their patients as monkeys. At bottom, the barber role is being performed, while at top the surgical and medical roles are shown. The profession of barber-surgeon dates from medieval times, when barbers carried out surgery, rather than doctors. It was not until the 18th century that the professions became distinct once more. This artwork, which was originally Italian, was obtained from the German book Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satirical artwork depicting the intriguing world of barber-surgeons during medieval times. The image portrays these skilled professionals and their patients as playful monkeys, adding a whimsical touch to an otherwise serious subject. At the bottom, we witness the traditional role of barbers being performed, while at the top, surgical and medical roles are depicted. In medieval times, barbers were responsible for carrying out surgeries instead of doctors. It wasn't until the 18th century that these professions became distinct once again. This fascinating piece of art originated in Italy and was obtained from Eugen Hollander's renowned book "Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin" (Caricature and Satire in Medicine) published in 1921. The monochrome illustration captures the essence of this historical period with its attention to detail and intricate portrayal of human figures alongside mischievous monkeys. It offers a glimpse into both the practices and perceptions surrounding medicine during that era. As we delve into this thought-provoking artwork, it serves as a reminder of how far medicine has evolved over time. From barber-surgeons treating patients to our modern-day operating rooms filled with highly specialized surgeons, this image invites us to reflect on the rich history behind our understanding and practice of medicine today.
