1777 Buffon Cyclopia congenital disorder
Plate VI, page 582, De Seve drawn & Chevillet engraver. Supplement of Volume IV of " L Histoire Naturelle" (servant de suite a l histoire naturelle de l homme). Published by M. le Comte de Buffon 1777 at L imprimerie Royale, Paris. Buffon notes this sufferer of cyclopia (also known as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia) was born October 1766, but lived only a few hours. Buffon gives few details, the plate is after Biheron and not original observation. He notes more details can be found in the gazette " Mercure de France". Cyclopia is a congenital abnormality in which the orbits of the eye fail to divide in two cavities. It causes the forebrain to stay whole instead of having two distinct hemispheres, resulting in a single optic and olefactory lobe. Facial malformation or absence of nose/mouth is associated with this disorder. Gene mutation and environmental toxins can cause this condition

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "1777 Buffon Cyclopia congenital disorder" offers a glimpse into the world of medical curiosity in the 18th century. The plate, drawn by De Seve and engraved by Chevillet, is part of the Supplement of Volume IV of "L Histoire Naturelle" published by M. le Comte de Buffon in 1777 at L imprimerie Royale, Paris. The image depicts a sufferer of cyclopia, also known as cyclocephaly or synophthalmia. Born in October 1766 but tragically surviving only a few hours, this individual's condition is characterized by the failure of eye orbits to divide into two cavities. As a result, their forebrain remains undivided instead of having distinct hemispheres, leading to a single optic and olfactory lobe. Buffon notes that he obtained this illustration from Biheron rather than making an original observation himself. He mentions that more details about this case can be found in the gazette "Mercure de France". Cyclopia is associated with facial malformation or even absence of nose/mouth. This rare congenital abnormality can be caused by gene mutations or exposure to environmental toxins during pregnancy. Paul D. Stewart's thought-provoking artwork not only sheds light on this fascinating historical medical anomaly but also serves as a reminder of the complexities within human genetics and development. It invites contemplation on inherited disorders and birth defects while highlighting the importance of understanding teratology for both scientific research and compassionate healthcare practices.
