Bourke Conservative Dublin Mayo Southwell Tory Viceroy
EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts Richard Southwell Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo (1822-1872), an influential Irish statesman and member of the British Conservative Party. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was styled as Lord Naas between 1842 and 1867 before assuming the title of Earl of Mayo. The image, produced by the renowned Parisian engraver, captures the distinguished figure of Lord Mayo in the height of 19th-century fashion. His formal attire, complete with a cravat and waistcoat, is accentuated by the vibrant colors of the print. Lord Mayo's political career began in earnest when he was appointed as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1858. He later served as Viceroy and Governor-General of India from 1869 to 1872. During his tenure in India, he implemented significant reforms aimed at improving the lives of the Indian population, including the establishment of a system of local self-government and the abolition of the sati practice. Tragically, Lord Mayo was assassinated in Calcutta in 1872, making him the first British Viceroy to be killed in office. His untimely death marked the end of a promising political career and left a lasting impact on the history of both Ireland and India. This evocative image, published in the Spanish and American Illustration in 1872, serves as a poignant reminder of Lord Mayo's significant contributions to the political landscape of Europe and the United Kingdom during the 19th century.
