19th Century elevated railway. 1880s engraving of a Meigs Elevated Railway. The Meigs Elevated Railway was an experimental steam-powered monorail invented by the American Josiah Vincent Meigs. The weight of the train was carried on a 22 inch gauge track, and balanced by an additional set of horizontal wheels that operated against a second set of rails, 42 inches above the first. A 227-foot demonstration line was built in 1886 in East Cambridge, Massachusetts USA, but a fire broke out on the night of 4th February 1887, and destroyed Meigss car sheds along with the experimental coach and tender and severely damaged the locomotive

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of 19th-century engineering - the Meigs Elevated Railway. Created by American inventor Josiah Vincent Meigs, this experimental steam-powered monorail revolutionized transportation during its time. The engraving depicts an intricate illustration of the railway system, providing a glimpse into the technological advancements of that era. The Meigs Elevated Railway operated on a unique 22-inch gauge track, with an additional set of horizontal wheels balancing the weight against a second set of rails positioned 42 inches above. This innovative design allowed for efficient and smooth locomotion along its path. In 1886, a groundbreaking demonstration line measuring 227 feet was constructed in East Cambridge, Massachusetts USA. However, tragedy struck on February 4th, 1887 when a devastating fire engulfed Meig's car sheds and severely damaged the locomotive along with the experimental coach and tender. Despite its untimely demise, this artwork serves as a testament to human ingenuity and perseverance in pushing boundaries within transportation technology. It offers us an intriguing window into history while reminding us of the ever-evolving nature of progress. This print from Science Photo Library captures not only the physical aspects but also evokes curiosity about how such visionary ideas shape our present-day transport systems.
