EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the Tomb of Godfrey de Bouillon in all its grandeur within the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem. Created by an anonymous European artist in the 19th century, this print offers a glimpse into a historical moment that has since been lost to time. Godfrey de Bouillon, a renowned medieval Frankish knight and one of the leaders of the First Crusade, is immortalized here through this drawing made on-site in 1828. Sadly, it serves as a poignant reminder that his tomb no longer exists today. The image showcases the remarkable architecture of this sacred space. The classical Romanesque design is evident with its sturdy pillars and rounded arches that create an atmosphere both majestic and solemn. It transports viewers back to the Middle Ages when knights like Godfrey fought valiantly for their beliefs during these crusades. As we gaze upon this lithograph, we are reminded not only of Godfrey's legacy but also of the significance of religious devotion during those tumultuous times. This print comes from Paul Lacroix's book "Military and Religious Life in the Middle Ages" published in London around 1880. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' collection, we can still appreciate and reflect upon these historical moments captured by talented artists long ago.
