Pleiades star cluster, infrared image

Pleiades star cluster, Spitzer infrared image. These bright young stars (blue) are surrounded by interstellar gas and dust (red, orange and green). This gas and dust is a part of a reflection nebula surrounding the stars. The Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) is an open star cluster of over 1000 stars, of which around 14 are visible to the naked eye. It is around 440 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Taurus. This image, published in 2007, was obtained by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the mesmerizing Pleiades star cluster, as captured by the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS). The image reveals a stunning interplay of colors, with bright young stars shining in brilliant blue hues amidst a backdrop of interstellar gas and dust painted in vibrant shades of red, orange, and green. These celestial materials form a breathtaking reflection nebula that envelops the stars. Known as the Seven Sisters or Pleiades, this open star cluster boasts over 1000 stars, although only around 14 are visible to the naked eye. Situated approximately 440 light years away from Earth within the constellation of Taurus, it has long fascinated astronomers and stargazers alike. Published in 2007 by Science Photo Library, this infrared image offers an extraordinary glimpse into our vast universe. It serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge about distant stellar phenomena and highlights the remarkable capabilities of modern astronomical technology such as IRAC and MIPS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. With its fusion of science and artistry, this photograph invites viewers to marvel at the beauty found within our cosmos while igniting curiosity about what other wonders lie beyond our reach.
