Solar prominence

Solar prominence. Ultraviolet SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) satellite image of a solar prominence (bottom left). The prominence is erupting from the chromosphere (orange), which lies above the Suns visible surface. Prominences are dense clouds of plasma, or ionised gas, in the Suns outer layer, the corona. They are typically at temperatures of 60, 000 Kelvin, much cooler than the several million Kelvin of the corona. Active regions (white) mark areas of high solar activity. The Suns activity peaks every 10-11 years. Image produced by SOHOs Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty and power of a solar prominence. Taken by the Ultraviolet SOHO satellite, this image showcases a remarkable eruption from the chromosphere, located just above the visible surface of our Sun. The vibrant orange hues depict dense clouds of plasma known as prominences, which exist within the corona - the outer layer of our star. Prominences like these are characterized by temperatures around 60,000 Kelvin, significantly cooler than their surroundings in the corona that can reach several million Kelvin. The white areas on this image indicate active regions with heightened solar activity. It is fascinating to note that such activity peaks every 10-11 years. Produced by SOHO's Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT), this photograph offers us a glimpse into an extraordinary celestial event occurring millions of miles away from Earth. As we marvel at this spectacle, it reminds us of both the immense power and delicate balance present in our vast universe. With its scientific significance and stunning visual appeal, this print serves as a testament to human curiosity and exploration in fields such as astronomy and cosmology. Let it transport you to another realm where stars come alive through breathtaking imagery captured by advanced technology aboard satellites like SOHO – expanding our understanding of distant phenomena while igniting wonder within us all.
